The approach

Tutoring should change how you think after the session ends.

I combine the depth of a research mathematician with deliberate, evidence-informed teaching. Our work is collaborative, candid, and built over time; the goal is greater mathematical independence, not dependence on a tutor.

01

Diagnose before explaining

A wrong answer can come from notational errors, a missing definition, calculation mistakes, or a deeper conceptual gap. We find which one it is.

02

Move between intuition and rigour

Pictures, examples, and informal reasoning build insight; precise definitions and well-crafted proofs make that insight dependable.

03

Practise productive struggle

I ask purposeful questions, give calibrated hints, and gradually withdraw support as your confidence and judgment grow.

Mathematics consulting

Thoughtful guidance for the decisions around the mathematics.

These are thoughtful one-to-one conversations for students and researchers in mathematics and adjacent STEM fields: specialist academic guidance grounded in your particular goals and circumstances.

01

College & Grad Admissions

Develop a coherent application strategy for mathematics and STEM programs, from program selection through written materials and interviews.

  • Program-fit strategy
  • CV and statement feedback
  • Interview preparation
02

Academic & Career Strategy

Clarify possible paths, evaluate graduate study, plan skill development, and make thoughtful decisions about research, industry, or academic careers.

  • One-time decision sessions
  • Longer-term academic planning
  • Mathematics and STEM focus
03

AI for research workflows

Build responsible, efficient ways to use AI for literature exploration, mathematical coding, note-making, writing revision, and research organization.

  • Workflow audit and design
  • Verification and reproducibility
  • Ethical use and disclosure

About your tutor

Dr. Caleb Marshall

I am a University of Toronto postdoctoral research fellow and a UBC-trained mathematician. For more than a decade, I have worked alongside students to turn intimidating mathematics into ideas they can reason with—and to build the confidence to keep going independently.

My teaching background includes the 2025 Killam Graduate Teaching Award, advanced university teaching certification, leadership of a UBC class of more than 80 students, and work as chief editor and co-author of two honours multivariable-calculus textbooks.

Frequently asked questions

The practical details.

If you are unsure whether your course, research workflow, or academic decision is a fit, send an inquiry. I will give you a candid recommendation.

Tutoring

What students and courses do you tutor?

I work with secondary, undergraduate, proof-based, and selected graduate mathematics students, including students preparing for qualifying exams. Statistics tutoring is available at secondary, undergraduate, and advanced levels; general SAT tutoring is offered within the secondary category. The best fit is someone willing to think actively, ask questions, and practise between meetings.

What happens in a typical tutoring session?

We begin with the idea or problem creating the most friction and talk through how you currently see it. I diagnose the underlying gap, rebuild the concept clearly, and then guide you through increasingly independent practice. Sessions are conversational and interactive rather than lecture-based.

How long and how frequent are tutoring sessions?

Most students begin with 60 minutes. For proof-based courses or substantial weekly problem sets, 90 minutes often provides enough time to develop an idea carefully without rushing. We choose a meeting rhythm around your course, goals, and the kind of continuity that will be most useful.

Do you help with assignments or graded work?

I will help you understand definitions, test ideas, find errors, and develop your own solution. I do not complete graded work, write submitted proofs, or participate in active assessments.

Consulting

What kind of consulting do you provide?

I provide one-to-one guidance in three areas: academic and career strategy, responsible AI integration for research workflows, and college or graduate-school admissions. Each engagement is shaped around a specific decision, project, or transition.

Who is consulting a good fit for?

Consulting is best suited to students and researchers in mathematics and adjacent STEM fields who want specialist, individualized guidance. It is not general life coaching; our work stays grounded in your academic context, goals, and circumstances.

What does a consulting engagement look like?

It may be a focused one-time conversation or a defined sequence of meetings with preparation and follow-up. Before we begin, we agree on the goal, scope, any useful materials, and the fee so that the engagement has a clear purpose.

What are the boundaries of your consulting work?

I provide strategy, feedback, and teaching. I do not ghostwrite applications, fabricate research, complete work presented as your own, or guarantee admissions, funding, research, or career outcomes.

Working together

What happens after I submit an inquiry?

I reply personally within two business days. For new tutoring students, we start with a free 15-minute introductory conversation to discuss your course, goals, and how I can help. We arrange this by email after your inquiry—there is no separate booking step and no obligation to book tutoring. For consulting inquiries, I suggest a next step based on the support you need.

Do you work with students outside Canada?

Yes. I work online with students and consulting clients across Canada and the United States. Tutoring rates can be viewed in either CAD or USD using the pricing toggle above.
